Driving Test Nerves - The Real Test

For many people the thought of taking their driving test can be worse than the actual test itself, it is usually the fear of what will happen on the day itself which brings on an attack of anxiety. The more nervous you are, the more likely you are to make mistakes.

So how can we get rid of it?

Most people who experience anxiety would describe themselves as almost feeling out of control, all of a sudden physical symptoms come rushing into them.

Some of these symptoms could be:

- Heart palpitations
- Sweating
- Nausea or abdominal distress
- Dizziness or unsteadyness
- Feeling of detachment
- Fear of going crazy or out of control
 
If you feel anxious only in response to a specific situation it is called situational anxiety. Situational anxiety is different from everyday fear in that it tends to be out of proportion. If you feel apprehension about taking your driving test then you have situational anxiety.

Anxiety can be brought on merely by thinking about taking your driving test. When you feel distressed about what might happen when you get behind the wheel with the examiner sitting next to you, and watching your every movement, you are experiencing what is called anticipatory anxiety. Sometimes this anxiety becomes intense enough to be called panic.
